Oral Microbiome and Health
The oral microbiome is the makeup of bacteria, fungi, and viruses in one’s mouth. There are over 700+ species of bacteria associated with the oral microbiome and each individual has on average 100 – 200 unique species.
The oral microbiome plays a vital role in oral and overall health & disease. Oral bacteria help with breaking down food, producing vitamins like vitamin B12 & K, and fighting off infection.
Most oral diseases including cavities, gum disease, and halitosis (bad breath) are driven by an overabundance of pathogenic (harmful) bacteria leading to an imbalance (dysbiosis) in the oral microbiome.
The mouth is the gateway to the body. Poor oral health is associated with a increased risk for systemic conditions including Alzheimer’s, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gut disorders, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. You can’t be healthy without a healthy mouth.
