Where Dentistry Meets Whole-Body Healing

Meridian Tooth Chart

Explore the traditional tooth-body relationships used in holistic and biological dentistry, and discover another way of looking at the mouth as part of the whole person.

The specific meridian relationships shown on this page are traditional and integrative associations. They are not established anatomical or causal relationships.

A Whole-Body Perspective

The mouth is not separate from the rest of the body.

In holistic and biological dentistry, we look beyond individual teeth to consider how oral health may relate to the whole person.

The Meridian Tooth Chart explores a traditional perspective on that connection. In acupuncture and other integrative systems, teeth are associated with energetic meridian pathways that correspond with different organs, glands, muscles, joints, and other areas of the body.

Why This Matters

A different lens can lead to a better conversation.

01

Whole-Body Perspective

Traditional meridian systems invite us to look beyond an isolated tooth and consider broader patterns involving organs, systems, structures, and overall health.

02

Patient Education

Understanding different perspectives can help you ask more informed questions and participate more actively in decisions about your oral health.

03

Integrative Dentistry

Meridian theory is one traditional lens within a much broader approach that includes clinical dentistry, imaging, biology, airway, oral microbiome, nutrition, and dental longevity.

Our Approach

How I use the Meridian Tooth Chart.

The meridian tooth chart comes from traditional Chinese medicine and later integrative dental frameworks that mapped individual teeth to different organs, glands, tissues, and body systems.

I don’t use this chart as a diagnostic tool, and I don’t believe a tooth should ever be evaluated based on a meridian relationship alone. I use it as one more lens through which to look at the whole person.

What we do know is that the mouth is deeply connected to overall health. Chronic inflammation, infection, the oral microbiome, airway, nutrition, immune function, and many other factors can influence oral and systemic health.

When a patient has a tooth with a history of infection, root canal treatment, repeated dental work, sensitivity, or another concern, the chart can sometimes raise interesting questions worth exploring.

If a dental finding appears to overlap with something happening elsewhere in the body, we look deeper using the things that matter most: your symptoms, health history, clinical examination, imaging, and appropriate testing.

The chart starts the conversation.
It never replaces the diagnosis.

Next Steps

What we look at next.

The chart can be a useful place to start, but it is never where the conversation ends. My goal is to understand what is actually happening with the tooth, how it may fit into the bigger picture of your health, and what we can do to preserve function, reduce unnecessary treatment, and support long-term dental health.

Comprehensive Whole-Body Dental Evaluation

I look at more than the tooth in front of me. Your gums, bite, airway, existing dental work, imaging, symptoms, oral microbiome, and health history all matter. The goal is to understand the full picture before deciding what, if anything, needs to be treated.

Oral Surgery & Root Canal Concerns

If you have a root canal-treated tooth, a previous extraction site, or an area that simply does not feel right, we can evaluate it carefully using clinical examination and appropriate 3D imaging. The goal is not to assume there is a problem, but to investigate thoughtfully when there is a reason to look deeper.

Dental Longevity & Biomimetic Dentistry

One of the most important questions I ask is: How do we help this tooth last as long as possible? Biomimetic dentistry focuses on preserving healthy tooth structure, controlling stress within the tooth, strengthening what remains, and restoring teeth in a way that respects their natural biomechanics. The goal is not simply to repair a tooth today, but to reduce the likelihood of needing more invasive dentistry later.

SMART Amalgam Removal

For patients who choose to remove mercury amalgam fillings, I follow the IAOMT SMART protocol to help reduce unnecessary exposure during removal while protecting the patient, team, and environment.

Questions & Answers

Meridian Tooth Chart FAQs

What is a meridian tooth chart?

A meridian tooth chart is an educational map used in holistic and biological dentistry that connects each of the 32 adult teeth with traditional acupuncture meridians and their associated organs, glands, joints, vertebrae, and other areas of the body.

I use it as one additional lens for looking at the whole person, not as a diagnostic test and never as a substitute for a clinical dental evaluation.

Which organs are associated with which teeth?

Traditional meridian charts commonly group teeth into broader relationships. Wisdom teeth are often associated with the heart and small intestine; molars with the stomach, spleen, and pancreas; premolars with the lungs and large intestine; canines with the liver and gallbladder; and incisors with the kidneys, bladder, and urogenital system.

These are traditional energetic associations rather than established anatomical pathways, which is why I always interpret them alongside actual dental and medical findings.

Is the meridian tooth chart scientifically proven?

The specific meridian connections between an individual tooth and a particular organ have not been established by conventional biomedical research.

What is well supported is the broader oral-systemic connection. The health of the mouth can interact with the rest of the body through inflammation, infection, the oral microbiome, immune function, and other biological pathways.

That distinction is important to me. I use the chart to ask better questions, not to make a diagnosis.

Can a problem with a tooth affect the rest of my body?

Dental infections and chronic inflammation do not necessarily remain isolated to a single tooth. Oral bacteria, inflammatory mediators, and immune responses can have effects beyond the mouth.

If I am concerned about a root canal-treated tooth, previous extraction site, periodontal infection, or another area, we evaluate it using your clinical examination, health history, and appropriate imaging, including CBCT when indicated.

The meridian chart may add another perspective, but treatment decisions are based on what we can actually diagnose.

How should I use this chart with my own symptoms?

Start by noticing teeth that are sensitive, cracked, heavily restored, root canal treated, extracted, or missing.

Click those teeth on the interactive chart and explore their traditional relationships. If something overlaps with symptoms or health concerns you already have, consider it a question worth discussing rather than proof that the two are connected.

At your appointment, we can compare those observations with your exam, imaging, dental history, bite, airway, oral health, and overall health history before drawing conclusions.

Can I have this evaluated with Dr. Gilson?

Yes. I see patients at Our Holistic Dentistry in Aventura, Florida, where my approach brings together holistic, biological, and biomimetic dentistry.

Depending on what we find, an evaluation may include your dental and medical history, digital imaging or CBCT, periodontal and oral-health assessment, bite and airway evaluation, existing restorations, root canal-treated teeth, previous surgical sites, and your goals for long-term dental health.

My goal is not simply to find something to treat. It is to understand the bigger picture, preserve healthy tooth structure whenever possible, and help you make informed decisions that support dental longevity and whole-body health.
