Holistic Dentistry
Treat the person, not just the procedure.
I do not see the mouth as an isolated system. Oral health lives inside a person who eats, breathes, sleeps, moves, experiences stress, takes medications, has a microbiome, and brings a lifetime of habits and health history into the dental chair.
My holistic approach brings those pieces into the conversation while still grounding dental decisions in examination, imaging, diagnosis and sound clinical care.
What Holistic Means to Me
Whole-body thinking without losing sight of the tooth in front of us.
Holistic dentistry is not a license to explain every symptom through the teeth or to replace medical care with dental theories.
It means I consider the broader context when it is relevant: inflammation, nutrition, airway, sleep, oral microbial balance, stress, lifestyle, medications, movement, and the patient’s own goals and values.
Sometimes that wider perspective changes treatment. Sometimes it simply helps us understand why a problem keeps returning. And sometimes the right conclusion is that a concern needs evaluation outside of dentistry.
The Whole-Body Lens
Six areas that can shape the oral environment.
Not every patient needs every conversation. The point is to notice what is relevant instead of treating the mouth in a vacuum.
Nutrition
What and how often we eat affects the environment around the teeth. Carbohydrate frequency, protein and mineral intake, hydration and dietary patterns can all matter for decay risk, gum health and healing.
Oral Microbiome
The mouth is an ecosystem, not a sterile surface. When useful, oral microbiome testing can provide another layer of information to personalize prevention, hygiene and product choices.
Airway + Sleep
Breathing patterns, mouth breathing, jaw position, sleep quality and oral anatomy can influence oral function, dry mouth, clenching and how a patient feels beyond the dental chair.
Movement + Exercise
Movement is part of whole-body health. It influences stress regulation, sleep, metabolic health and the way we experience our bodies. Dentistry does not prescribe an exercise program, but a holistic conversation should not pretend movement is irrelevant.
Stress + Nervous System
Stress can show up through clenching, muscle tension, altered breathing, sleep disruption and a very different experience in the dental chair. Awareness and breathing can be useful tools for helping the body settle.
Lifestyle + Daily Habits
Sleep, hydration, smoking or vaping, alcohol, medications, supplements, oral-hygiene habits and how a person cares for themselves day to day all shape the environment in which dental health exists.
Fluoride-Free Dentistry
My approach to prevention is fluoride free.
I prefer to build prevention around hygiene, nutrition, saliva, microbial balance and hydroxyapatite-based remineralization strategies.
Hydroxyapatite is a calcium-phosphate mineral closely related to the mineral found naturally in teeth. I use and recommend hydroxyapatite products as my preferred non-fluoride approach to remineralization.
Meridian Tooth Chart
Another lens for asking whole-body questions.
The Meridian Tooth Chart explores traditional associations between individual teeth, meridian pathways and different organs, glands, muscles, joints and body regions.
I do not use the chart as a diagnostic tool, and I do not believe a tooth should be treated because of a meridian association alone.
I use it as one additional lens. If a dental finding appears to overlap with something happening elsewhere in the body, it may raise a question worth exploring through the things that matter most: symptoms, health history, examination, imaging and appropriate testing.
The exact tooth-to-organ relationships shown on meridian charts come from traditional and integrative frameworks and have not been established as anatomical or causal relationships by modern medical science.
Dental Anxiety + Breathing
The nervous system comes into the treatment room too.
A patient who feels rushed, unheard or tense experiences dentistry differently.
I want the dental chair to feel like a place where you can understand what is happening, ask questions, and regain some control over your own nervous system.
Breathing techniques can be a simple way to reduce the sense of urgency or tension before and during treatment. They are not a replacement for appropriate anxiety management, but they can be a useful part of it.
“How I live is how I practice.”
The Mindful Doctor Philosophy
I do not want to recommend a way of living that I am unwilling to practice myself.
Holistic dentistry feels most coherent to me when the values inside the operatory resemble the values outside of it.
I care about nutrition, movement, breath, mindfulness, sleep, relationships, learning and creating a life that supports health rather than only reacting to disease.
I am not asking patients to live exactly as I do. The point is coherence. I believe health is shaped by repeated choices, and I try to bring that same curiosity and intention into the way I practice dentistry.
Your First Visit
We start with the person, not the procedure.
Your first appointment is designed to understand your current oral health and the context around it before we decide what treatment, if any, comes next.

Patients visit from Aventura, Miami, Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale and across South Florida because they are looking for a dental approach that considers more than the isolated tooth.
For someone searching for a holistic dentist, I recommend looking beyond the label. Ask whether the practice can explain how its whole-body philosophy actually changes the examination, diagnosis, prevention, materials and treatment decisions.
Questions
Holistic Dentistry FAQs
What is holistic dentistry?
Holistic dentistry considers oral health in the context of the whole person. Depending on the patient, that may include nutrition, the oral microbiome, airway and sleep, stress, lifestyle, dental materials and other health factors alongside standard dental examination and diagnosis.
Is holistic dentistry a recognized dental specialty?
No. Holistic dentistry describes an approach or philosophy of care, not a formally recognized dental specialty. Diagnosis and treatment should still be grounded in appropriate clinical evaluation.
Is your holistic dentistry approach fluoride free?
Yes. My prevention philosophy is fluoride free. I emphasize hygiene, nutrition, saliva, oral microbial balance and hydroxyapatite-based remineralization strategies. I also believe patients deserve clear information so they can make informed decisions about preventive products.
What does nutrition have to do with dental health?
Diet influences the oral environment. Frequency of fermentable carbohydrates, hydration, saliva, nutrient intake and eating patterns can affect decay risk, periodontal health and healing. Nutrition is one piece of the picture, not a substitute for necessary dental treatment.
Why do you consider airway and sleep?
Breathing patterns, mouth breathing, sleep quality and jaw position can affect dry mouth, clenching and oral function. Dental screening can identify questions worth exploring, but diagnosis of a sleep disorder may require appropriate medical evaluation.
What is the Meridian Tooth Chart?
The Meridian Tooth Chart is an educational map drawn from traditional meridian theory and later integrative dental frameworks. It associates individual teeth with different meridians and body regions. These specific tooth-to-organ associations are not established anatomical or causal relationships in modern medical science, so I use the chart to raise questions, not to make diagnoses.
Can breathing techniques help with dental anxiety?
For some people, intentional breathing can help reduce tension and create a greater sense of control before or during a dental visit. It is one supportive tool and does not replace other anxiety-management options when those are appropriate.
What do you mean by “How I live is how I practice”?
It means I try to live the same health principles I bring into my clinical philosophy: movement, nutrition, breath, mindfulness, sleep, learning and intentional daily habits. I do not expect patients to live exactly as I do. I value coherence between the health principles I discuss and the way I approach my own life.
How do I find a holistic dentist in South Florida?
Look for a dentist who can explain exactly how a whole-person perspective changes the examination, prevention, material selection and treatment plan. Dr. Seth Gilson practices holistic, biological and biomimetic dentistry at Our Holistic Dentistry in Aventura, Florida.
