TMJ + Myoaligner® in Aventura, South Florida
TMJ + Myoaligner®
Jaw pain is not one diagnosis. The first step is understanding what is actually contributing to your symptoms.
Temporomandibular disorders, or TMDs, can involve the jaw joints, chewing muscles, headaches, clenching, grinding and altered jaw function.
My approach begins with conservative, reversible care. For selected adult patients, that may include Myoaligner®, a custom removable appliance with FDA-cleared indications related to TMD, bruxism, clenching, associated pain and headaches.
TMJ vs. TMD
Your TMJ is the joint. TMD describes the disorders.
Everyone has two temporomandibular joints. They sit just in front of the ears and allow the lower jaw to rotate and translate during talking, chewing and opening.
Temporomandibular disorders are a group of conditions involving the jaw joints, the muscles used for chewing, or headaches associated with TMD.
There is no single cause that explains every case. Trauma, parafunctional habits, muscle dysfunction, pain sensitization, stress, joint pathology and other factors can contribute differently from one patient to another.
Symptoms Worth Evaluating
Jaw problems can show up in several different ways.
These symptoms can occur with TMD, but they can also have other causes. Diagnosis matters.
Jaw pain
Pain may be felt directly around the joint or in the muscles of the jaw, cheek and temples.
Headaches
Some patients with TMD also experience recurring temporal or facial headaches.
Grinding + clenching
Bruxism can contribute to tooth wear, muscle fatigue, restoration damage and morning discomfort.
Painful joint sounds
Clicking, popping or grinding accompanied by pain or dysfunction deserves evaluation.
Locking or limited opening
Difficulty opening, closing or moving the jaw can indicate joint or muscular dysfunction.
A changing bite
A noticeable change in how the upper and lower teeth meet can be an important diagnostic clue.
Conservative First
Start with what is reversible before permanently changing teeth or joints.
This principle matters especially in TMD care.
Because TMD is multifactorial and symptoms can change, conservative treatment gives us an opportunity to learn how the system responds without immediately committing to irreversible dental procedures.
Myoaligner®
A removable appliance designed for selected TMJ, bruxism and headache-related indications.
Myoaligner® is a custom, prescription intraoral appliance.
Its segmented, removable design can be customized to provide bite support where it is needed without permanently altering the teeth.
It is important to distinguish Myoaligner® from a clear orthodontic aligner. Myoaligner® is not designed to straighten teeth.
It is used as a removable functional appliance within a dentist-directed treatment plan.
FDA-Cleared Indications
What Myoaligner® is actually cleared for.
Precision matters. These indications come from the FDA clearance for the Myoaligner Appliance.
How Treatment Begins
The appliance comes after the diagnosis.
Muscles Matter
Sometimes we need to understand the jaw after the muscles have had an opportunity to relax.
Muscle tension can influence how the jaw feels and how a patient naturally positions it.
In selected cases, neuromuscular techniques such as low-frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or TENS, may be incorporated as part of the evaluation or treatment process.
The purpose is not to claim that a machine identifies one universally “perfect bite.” It is another source of clinical information that can be considered alongside symptoms, examination and functional response.
The Whole-Person Context
TMJ care may involve more than an appliance.
TMD is often multifactorial. I do not want every problem to look like a bite problem simply because I am a dentist.

Jaw Function
Looking beyond the obvious symptoms
A broader look at jaw function, muscle tension and the way TMJ symptoms can connect with the rest of the functional system.
Evidence-Informed TMJ Care
TMD deserves nuance, not one explanation for every patient.
Appliances can be useful, but the evidence across splint therapies remains mixed.
That is another reason I favor conservative, reversible treatment and ongoing reassessment.
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research describes TMDs as more than 30 conditions affecting the TMJs and muscles controlling jaw movement.
Read the NIDCR overview →NIDCR advises beginning with conservative approaches and avoiding treatments that permanently change the teeth, bite or jaw joints unless clearly indicated.
Review the treatment guidance →Reviews of occlusal splint therapy generally report small beneficial or neutral effects, with meaningful variation among patients and treatment protocols.
Myoaligner® received FDA 510(k) clearance under K230548 as a prescription mouthguard for its listed indications. FDA clearance does not mean every patient with facial pain is automatically an appropriate candidate.

The treatment plan should change as your symptoms and function change.
Myoaligner® wear is prescribed individually.
Official Myoaligner® materials describe day-and-night use during the initial phase for some patients, followed by reduced wear as treatment progresses.
That is not a universal schedule. Diagnosis, symptoms, response and treatment goals determine how the appliance should be used.

Ask what diagnosis is being treated, whether the proposed treatment is reversible, what other causes need to be considered, how improvement will be measured, and what happens if symptoms do not respond.
Questions
TMJ + Myoaligner® FAQs
What is the difference between TMJ and TMD?
TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint itself. TMD, or temporomandibular disorder, refers to a group of conditions involving the jaw joints, chewing muscles and associated pain or dysfunction.
What symptoms can occur with TMD?
Symptoms can include jaw or chewing-muscle pain, facial pain, limited movement, jaw locking, painful clicking or popping, headaches, stiffness and changes in how the teeth fit together. These symptoms can also have other causes, so evaluation matters.
Does jaw clicking mean I need treatment?
Not necessarily. Painless jaw clicking or popping is common and may not require treatment. Clicking accompanied by pain, locking, limited movement or functional changes deserves evaluation.
What is Myoaligner®?
Myoaligner® is a custom, removable prescription intraoral appliance. The device has FDA-cleared indications related to bruxism, clenching, associated headaches and pain, muscle spasm and temporary treatment of selected TMD symptoms in adults.
Is Myoaligner® a clear orthodontic aligner?
No. Myoaligner® is not an orthodontic aligner and is not intended to straighten teeth. It is a removable functional dental appliance used according to a dentist-directed treatment plan.
Is Myoaligner® FDA approved?
The more accurate term is FDA cleared. The Myoaligner Appliance received FDA 510(k) clearance under K230548 as a prescription mouthguard for its listed indications.
Can Myoaligner® help headaches or migraines?
The FDA-cleared indications include relief of bruxism-related headaches, migraines and pain. That does not mean every headache or migraine originates from the jaw. Headaches can have many causes, and appropriate medical evaluation may be necessary.
Is a bad bite the cause of all TMD?
No. TMD is multifactorial, and current evidence does not support the idea that malocclusion universally causes TMD. The bite can still be clinically relevant in selected patients, but it should be evaluated as one part of a broader diagnostic picture.
Do you use TENS for TMJ evaluation?
TENS may be used in selected cases as one part of a neuromuscular and functional evaluation. It is not a stand-alone diagnostic test and does not determine one universally correct jaw position by itself.
How long is Myoaligner® treatment?
Treatment length varies according to the diagnosis, symptoms, treatment goals and response. Individual wear instructions and treatment duration should be determined by the treating dentist.
Does everyone with TMJ pain need an appliance?
No. TMD treatment depends on the diagnosis. Self-management, physical therapy, behavioral strategies, medication, an intraoral appliance or referral may be appropriate depending on the condition.
